In collaborazione con gli amici di Birik Butik vi presentiamo un nuovo designer: Gregory Larin. I suoi lavori sono il frutto delle sue esperienze che vanno dalla Russia (dov’è nato) fino ad Israele, luogo in cui attualmente vive e lavora con un passato da costruttore di aerei presso l’Air Force, come da tutto questo possano nascere dei gioielli lo scopriremo assieme adesso:
Come sei diventato un jewelry designer? | How you became a jewelry designer?
Sono nato in Russia nella città di Tula, una città industriale, che è nota per la sua produzione di armi e pan di zenzero. Dopo essere emigrato a 19 anni in Israele, nel 1997, mi sono capitato all’IDF, dove ho lavorato come costruttore di aerei presso l’Air Force per due anni e mezzo. E’ stato lì che ho scoperto la mia creatività. Una volta terminato il servizio militare, ho fatto un corso di lavorazione metallo fondato dal governo e ho deciso di continuarlo a livello accademico. Nel 2007 mi sono laureato con lode presso il dipartimento di Design del Gioiello della Facolta di Shenkar molto rinomata. Da allora il mio lavoro è in giro per mostre in tutto il mondo, dove mi presento sia come artista che come artigiano.
I was born in Russia in the city Tula, an industrial city which is known for it’s manufacturing of weapons and gingerbread. After immigrating at the age of 19 to Israel in 1997, I got drafted to the IDF, where I served as an aircraft builder at the Air Force for two and a half years. It was there where I discovered my creativity. Once my military service ended, I took a government founded metalwork course and then decided to continue on an academic level. In 2007 I graduated with honors from the department of Jewelry Design in the renowned Shenkar College of engineering and design.
Quali sono le tue influenze? | What are your influences?
Una delle mie maggiori influenze per il mio lavoro é la “street culture”- punk, graffiti e hard core. Trattando con la parte estrema in tutti i temi della mia vita e delle mie creazioni, portandola al massimo fino al limite.
One of the major influence in my artwork is the “street culture”- punk, graffiti and hard core. Dealing with the extreme part of life in all the topics of my living and creation, taking it to the maximum, to the edge.
Quali sono i tuoi tempi principali e la tua maggior fonte d’ispirazione? | What are the main themes, the main sources of inspiration?
I temi attuali che sto affrontando con il mio lavoro sono tratti da diversi tipi di discipline che di solito sono considerati tabù per la maggior parte delle persone. Argomenti quali l’anatomia, lo studio del corpo umano, i materiali di cui il corpo umano è composto da-parti interne del corpo, fetish, e problemi ulteriori. Inoltre prendo molta ispirazione dalla musica, a partire dal heavy metal fino alla musica classica.
The current issues that I’m now dealing with in my work are taken from different types of disciplines that are usually considered taboo for most people. Topics such as anatomy, the study of human body, materials of which the human body is made from- internal body parts, fetish, and further issues. Also I get lot’s of inspiration from music, starting from heavy metal music to classical music.
Hai un’interessante tecnica nel realizzare i tuoi gioielli, raccontacela. | You have a very interesting technique that you use creating your pieces of art, tell us about it.
Le tecniche che uso per creare i miei prodotti sono di solito tecniche speciali che ho sviluppato io stesso in combinazione con tecniche classiche di metallo. Incorporo materiali tradizionali, come l’argento 925 con materiali innovativi, come la resina epossidica e polimerici – come la mia nuova collezione “Phantom”. Inoltre ho assimilato nel mio lavoro materiali più sovversivi come parti di bambole, porcellane, capelli sintetici e altro ancora.
The techniques that I use creating my designs are usually special techniques that I
develope myself combined with classical techniques of metalwork. I incorporate traditional materials, such as Silver 925 with innovative materials, such as epoxy and polymeric – like my new collection “Phantom”. In addition I assimilate into my work more subversive Materials such as Doll parts, porcelain, synthetic hair and more.
Descrivici quale tipo di donna sceglierebbe d’indossare i tuoi gioielli. | Describe us a woman who chooses to wear your jewelry.
La donna che sceglie di indossare i miei gioielli è prima di tutto una donna che apprezza e ama l’arte e il design. Io non credo che ci sia una fascia di età specifica per la donna per cui progetto i miei gioielli, credo che la cosa più importante è che la donna che indosserà i miei gioielli li ami e che ne apprezzi il lavoro che ho messo nel realizzarli.
The woman that will choose to wear my jewelry is first of all a woman that appreciates and loves art and design. I do not think there is a specific age range for the woman I design my jewelry, I believe that the most important thing is that the woman that will wear my jewelry will love it and appreciate the work that I put into the jewelry.
Lavori anche in altri ambiti dell’arte? | Do you work on other types of art /self expression?
Oltre ad essere una designer di gioielli sono anche un artista multidisciplinare. Propongo opere d’arte (scultura in particolare) in tutto il mondo, sia come artista che come artigiano. Lavoro in una nicchia molto particolare nel design del gioiello chiamato gioielli d’arte che parla della linea di confine tra arte e progettazione di gioielli e design in generale. Questa arte è di solito di piccole dimensioni (ho presentato sculture di grandi dimensioni e sculture), a volte gioielli da indossare ed altre che parla del corpo a livello concettuale che va al di là del mondo della gioielleria.
In addition of being a jewelry designer I’m also a multidisciplinary artist. I present works of art (sculpture in particular) around the world both as an artist and as craftsman. I work in a very unique niche in jewelry design called art jewelry that talks about the line between art and jewelry design and design in general. This art is usually small-scale sculptures (I presented large-scale sculptures as well), Sometimes Wearable jewel and sometimes pieces that talks about the body on a conceptual level and sometimes it extends beyond the jewelry world completely.
