il giusto coraggio / the right kind of courage
A 16 anni è dislessico, non riesce né a leggere né a scrivere. Un amico teenager gli lancia una scommessa: “se riesci a leggere Harry Potter ti do 30£”. Una sfida che culmina con letture di Hemingway, Günter Grass, Shakespeare e faldoni di vocaboli scritti a penna che Thomas studia con molta cura. Si laurea in letteratura inglese e inizia a lavorare come professore di lingua in alcuni istituti londinesi e come barman nel weekend per poter pagare il finanziamento richiesto per le tasse universitarie. Un colpo di fulmine e molla tutto. S’innamora di un’italiana d.o.c. e lascia Londra, la famiglia, gli amici e il lavoro per seguirla a Milano. In tasca il giusto per sopravvivere in attesa di un impiego. Finisce l’amore e trova un appartamento in stile British ma sempre a Milano, dove inizia la sua attività indipendente come insegnante d’inglese collaborando con gli istituti di lingua più prestigiosi della città. / Aged 16 he is dyslexic, unable to spell his name correctly. A family friend made a bet: “If you can read Harry Potter I’ll give you £30.” A challenge that led to Hemingway, then Günter Grass and Shakespeare. He began creating a list of vocabulary to keep a tab on all the new words he was learning that grew hundreds of pages long. He studied literature rapaciously. He graduated in English literature and he began working as a language teacher in schools in London and as a barman on weekends to pay university debts. He was then struck with cupid’s arrow. Fell in love with a typical Italian and left London, his family, friends and job to move to Milan, with enough money to survive for a week. His relationship ended and he moved into a British style apartment in the centre of Milan, where he began as a freelance English teacher working with the city’s more prestigious institutions.

– cosa ha fatto scattare il cambiamento… sono uno scrittore per passione e per completare questo mio lato dovevo trovare e provare modi di comunicare diversi, e la professione di insegnante d’inglese è perfetta perché attraverso il mio lavoro conosco gente di ogni etnia, colore e cultura ed io posso comunicare con tutte queste realtà
– cosa o chi ti ha ispirato… mia madre, è un soldato, ha vissuto cose molto brutte nella vita ma sempre con il sorriso, she’s sunny!
– la goccia che ha fatto traboccare il tuo vaso… il mio desiderio da sempre: viaggiare! e la voglia di libertà, anche se non avevo abbastanza soldi ho colto le opportunità che si sono presentate
– salto nel vuoto o nel materasso… assolutamente nel vuoto! sono arrivato a Milano e l’unica cosa che avevo era la gentilezza di un’altra persona che non volevo sfruttare, volevo farcela da solo! all’inizio era spaventoso, è stato durissimo ma dentro di me sapevo che pian piano non sarebbe stato più un vuoto, ci ho creduto fortemente
– la crisi, opportunità o minaccia… indifferente, non è cambiato niente per me, il mio stato mentale è sempre stato più importante della situazione reale: mi è andata bene quando l’economia andava male e viceversa.
– presente e passato: il tuo prima e il tuo adesso… 100% presente! sono soddisfatto, realizzato e sto benissimo, passiamo troppo tempo a pensare al passato, viviamo il presente!
– progetti futuri… finire il mio libro, continuare a scrivere, viaggiare e amare

– your motto in life… the best is yet to come!
– your colour… black, just like Johnny Cash, the musical genius who identified with common people; he associated black with the common man.
– your key word… get undisturbed. That’s my life’s goal everyday.
– what triggered the change… I’m a writer and to compliment this side of my life I had to find a way of interacting with different people to learn about them. Being an English teacher is perfect for this because through my work I meet people of every race, colour and culture.
– what or who inspired you… my mother, she is a soldier, she’s had a really tough life but always comes through smiling, she is sunny!
– what was the straw that broke the camel’s back… my desire to travel and be free. I had no cash but I grabbed the chance when I saw it.
– jumping into a void or a mattress… the void, big time! I got to Milan and all I had was the kindness of another person. I wanted to do it all alone. At first it was real scary and hard sometimes, but I absolutely knew that I wouldn’t always be in the void. I really believed it
– the crisis: opportunity or threat… it hasn’t changed anything for me, my attitude was always more important than my situation: I’ve done well when the economy was bad, and I’ve done badly when the economy was good.
– past and present: how things were or how things are… definitely the present. I’m proud of myself and I’ve found my way. I’ve spent too much time in the past. Now is much better.
– future plans… finish my book, keep writing, travel and love [/column]
Thomas è giusto perché… mette in gioco sé stesso, ha il coraggio di rischiare e ti prende per mano quando si butta dal paracadute (è anche insegnante di paracadutismo). / Thomas is right because… he throws the dice, he takes risks in life, and when others around him want to skydive, he’ll hold them by the hand (he’s also a skydiver).
