«Questo festival non è un altro festival di cortometraggi»: scrivono i ragazzi del Guarimba di Amantea. Non si tratta di una frase di circostanza, una di quelle usate dagli uffici stampa che confondono il proprio mestiere con quello dei pubblicitari. Il neonato Guarimba è veramente “qualcos’altro”: una storia che attende d’essere raccontata. Solo il fatto che esista ci dimostra che la favola di Nuovo Cinema Paradiso può avere, se non un lieto fine, almeno una parabola meno amara. In questo caso il cinema è il l’Arena Sicoli di Amantea, cittadina calabra di 15.000 abitanti. 900 posti, all’aperto, inaccessibile da due anni. L’ultima delle tre sale del paese a chiudere i battenti. Ora gli abitanti, per sognare con la settima arte, devono rivolgersi al digitale terrestre, o guidare fino al multisala più vicino.
Non è solo un pezzo di storia italiana, quello che ogni anno viene seppellito assieme ai cinema diventati covo di polvere e silenzi. È la linfa di una società che appassisce, rinunciando alla comunità in favore di una massificazione consumista e isolazionista. Lo sanno i ragazzi de La Guarimba film festival, che aprirà il 5 agosto e chiuderà il 9, tutti giovanissimi, con cognomi che parlano, finalmente, di una multiculturalità sana, di sinergie globali estranee al guadagno, inedite alleanze: Giulio Vita, il collettivo El Tornillo de Klaus, Marivi Hernandez, Sara Fratini, Maria Degtarienko, Mariangela Ochoa, Sherezade Alvarez, Marina Guiu, Marta Naccarato. Il Festival si può sostenere con donazioni via internet, al sito laguarimba.com, ricevendo in regalo magliette, borse col logo della rassegna, sassi del mare di Amantea dipinti da artisti locali, bottiglie di vino. Il regalo più grande, però, sarà vedere (o sapere), che l’Arena Sicoli è di nuovo viva, anche se solo per tre notti.
I corti saranno divisi in quattro sezioni: Fiction, Premio del Pubblico, Documentario e Animazione. Arrivano da tutto il mondo. La giuria ufficiale è composta dai registi Nacho Vigalondo (nominato all’Oscar nel 2004 e autore del thriller Open Windows, con Elija Wood), Claudio Metallo e Carlos Cristobal.
Le proiezioni coloreranno anche i muri delle case della vicina Campora San Giovanni. Oltre ai film ci saranno degustazioni di prodotti tipici, l’esposizione dei cartelloni del festival, realizzati da illustratori dei quattro continenti; concerti e incontri. I premi di categoria saranno di 1.000 euro, una cifra che farebbe sorridere i concorrenti di Venezia o Cannes, ma che per un cineasta indipendente potrebbe segnare la differenza tra realizzare il prossimo corto o lasciare che resti una fantasia.
Boys and girls from Guarimba and Amantea write “This festival is not another short films festival”. It is not a phrase of circumstance, but one of those phrases that are used in the Press Offices that confuse their own job with the one of advertising experts.
The new- born Guarimba is really “something else”: a story that is waiting for being told. The fact that it exists, shows that the fairy-tale Nuovo Cinema Paradiso could have, if not an happy ending, at least a less bitter ending. In this case, the cinema is the Arena Sicoli in Amantea, a small town in Calabria with 15.000 citizens. 900 seats, outdoor, inaccessible for two years. The last of the three cinema halls to be closed. Now, the citizens must use the digital terrestrial, or drive to the closer cinema for dreaming with the seventh art.
It is not only a piece of the Italian story, the one that every year is buried with the cinemas that are full of dust and silence. It’s the lymph of a society that fade, renouncing to the community for a consumerist and isolationist standardization.

You could support this Festival with donations by internet, at the site laguarimba.com, receiving gifts like t-shirts, bags with the Festival logo, sea stones from Amantea painted by local artists, bottles of wine. But the biggest gift is to see (or to know) that the Arena Scicoli is alive again, even if only for three weeks.
The shorts films will be divided in four sections: Fiction, Audience Award, Documentary and Animation. They come from all over the world. The official jury is composed by the producers Nacho Vigalondo (named at the Oscar in 2004 and writer of the thriller Open Windows, with Elia Wood), Claudio Metallo and Carlos Cristobal.
Projections will color also homes’ wall near Campora San Giovanni. More than films, there will be tastings of typical products, the exposition of festival papers realized by designers from the four continents, concerts and meetings.
Category awards will be of 1.000 euros, a sum of money that could make the Venise or Cannes concurrent smile, but that could be important for an independent cinema producer. In fact, it could mean the realization of the next short film or only a fantasy.
