Questo lo slogan di Life, la rivista dove Walter Mitty lavora da 16 anni come photo editor, che sta per chiudere i battenti. A tutti noi capita di viaggiare solo con la mente e di imbambolarsi talvolta con lo sguardo nel vuoto, ma a Walter un po’ di più, forse per sfuggire ad una quotidianità senza apparente possibilità di riscatto. Walter sogna, ad occhi aperti, di volare, di viaggiare, di osare. Ma è tutto frutto della sua mente fino a quando, per cercare di non perdere il posto di lavoro, si butta a vedere il mondo inseguendo un negativo scomparso, complice anche una collega da poco arrivata, a vedere la vita e si accorge che “una volta – dice – avevo idea di cosa volevo fare e di dove volevo essere”, ora di essere solamente una perfetta macchina dei sogni. È difficile condensare in un unico film una fotografia da togliere il fiato, una storia che parla di sfide e coraggio e un personaggio cucito sulla personalità filmica di Ben Stiller, ma “I sogni segreti di Walter Mitty” riesce nella metafora che collega una rivista, Life, che chiude ma riesce ad aprire alla vita, appunto. Ispirato dal racconto breve di James Thurber apparso per la prima volta sul settimanale New Yorker nel 1939, il film diretto ed interpretato da Ben Stiller vi insegnerà che le cose belle non chiedono attenzione, sarà vostro compito andarle a cercare. Un po’ come i sogni: nessuno è felice di aver fatto un bel sogno, ma lo sarà se riuscirà a raggiungerlo. Il film ci insegna che i sogni, molto spesso, possono realizzarsi davvero. Certamente lo ha insegnato al film maker Casey Neistat che avrebbe dovuto girare un video promozionale per il film ma ha pensato, e ottenuto il consenso dalla Twentieth Century Fox, che la maniera migliore per raccontare il potere dei sogni era realizzarne uno. Casey, e la sua troupe, con i soldi del budget ha quindi portato in prima persona forniture di cibo, strumenti e medicine a Tacoblan, nelle Filippine, recentemente colpita dal tifone Haiyan.

But it’s all a figment of his mind until, to try to not lose his job, he embark himself to see the world for chase a negative disappeared, also because a colleague recently arrived, to see life and realizes that “a time – he says – I had idea what I wanted to do and where I wanted to be”, now to be just a perfect dream machine. It’s difficult to join into a single film a breathtaking photograph, a story about the challenges and courage and the Ben Stiller film’s character, but “The secret life of Walter Mitty” is able in linking a magazine, Life, that closes but succeeds to open to life.
