AISTHESIS – All’origine delle sensazioni. Robert Irwin e James Turrell.

One of the best advices I could give at this moment about an exhibition that I would recommend to go to see is definitely the one which is happening at Villa Panza in Varese which began on 27th  November and will last until 2nd November 2014: AISTHESIS – the origin of sensations. Robert Irwin and James Turrell. The exhibition project is realized in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Museum of art (LACMA), the Guggenheim Museum of New York, the Getty Research Institute of Los Angeles and the Archive Panza of Mendrisio. The main character is the light in all its shapes and we ourselves that interact with it in some way. Projections and site-specific installations ensued in the room beyond clips about the authors of the works, documents and notes of Count Giuseppe Panza, pioneer in importing works of environmental art in Italy. The light interacts with the surrounding architecture just maybe refracting on a column placed in a corner of the room (“Untitled (Column)”) or projecting on a wall, creating a 3D effect (“Blue”, “Shanta Afrum I (white)”) or through a hologram (“Blue Green Ellipse Outie (XXVIII)”). But surely the most striking impact placed at the end of the exhibition in the stables of the Villa is the installation “GANZFIELD”, a German word to describe the total loss of depth sensation that Turrell artificially recreates with the controlled use of light, coved corners and a plan where you walk barefoot slightly inclined; an experience where we are immersed into the light and where you can magically lose your own space-time coordinates. For those who have never visited this place of FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) will be nice also being surrounded by the colored light of neon used by Dan Flavin, whose works are part with others one of the already mentioned authors, of the permanent collection. An opportunity to take a break and be surprised step by step from the different perceptions that you live in this unique Villa for this reason so precious and appreciable.
